 Description

Exchanging zabbix templates or external check scripts is currently a real pain - the wiki page contains lots of bad and outdated templates.
(see: http://www.zabbix.com/wiki/templates/start)

From my point of view zabbix will not elevate to a higher level of distribution without this

The zabbix website should have a area to exchange zabbix templates and external check scripts in a comparable way of nagios-exchange.
(example: http://exchange.nagios.org/index.php?option=com_mtree&task=search&Itemid=74&searchword=mysql)

From my point of view, that website should provide the following features:

  • users should be capable to add their templates/external check scripts by their own
(name, description, categories, download url, sourcecode repository, ...)
  • link to recent templates/external check scripts in sourcecode repositories
(i.e. github, self hosted svn and git repositories, ...)
  • link to detailed documentation in sourcecode repositories
  • searching for suitable templates
    (full text search, tags, ...)
  • users should be capable to rate and comment
(to help users to find out details about the quality of the templates/external check scripts)

I think this has been missing for a while. I'd recommend storing templates @ http://untergeek.github.io/zabbix-grab-bag/ for now, as github lends itself to being easy to collaborate, update, document, etc.

The wiki is not a place to store code/templates.

Hi All,

This issue is getting more and more serious, and the need is there, if we still just pointing to an wiki page that is not really getting anywhere.
As the original topic opener wrote "the wiki page contains lots of bad and outdated templates" which is showing this is not maintained at all.
But this is just half of the problem, there is way more useful template all around the place which is never submitted because it's not so easy, and you have to host it and etc, so we lose all of that.

With the upcoming 2.2 and the loadable modules, this is become more and more required, why an traditional wiki is not suitable for this is simple, there easy way to maintain it, it's way less dynamic that it should be, and it's simple not suitable for collaborated code work, maybes it's good for the documentation, but the template, module, script collection is not a document.

Marc marked some key feature of the solution what's needed, and I think I agree with him on most of them, but I would go in an other way, how the nagios handle it also quite good, with the ranking, that's quite good, the other example what I propose is puppet forge way.

If someone is not familiar with the way how it's handled there some highlights.
-user can upload they manifest/module ( in zabbix template, script module )
-there are some "official" module ( called puppetlabs there )
-the users can update, and suggest fixes

So if we add to this the ranking, and nice searching that's enough.

Bacily the key thing is again

Community drived centralized maintained collection of templates, scripts and modules

ps.: i'm not native english so, excuse me....

As the original topic opener wrote "the wiki page contains lots of bad and outdated templates" which is showing this is not maintained at all.

first, on zabbix.org the template section is seeing quite a lot of additions and updates lately (i agree that it could be better looking, but it's a wiki - please, do improve it )

also, on the "not maintained at all" part - the "old" wiki is definitely not maintained, the .org page gets updates. if you think the updates are no good, please, help us

Community drived centralized maintained collection of templates, scripts and modules

PLEASE come and join us !
i'd LOVE (and i don't use uppercase much ;> ) to have somebody involved in this on zabbix.org - we can host there anything and we can help you to get started.

i think i even had somewhere a spec draft for some frontend for template storage like that.

the problem is that many people say "oh, the community should get involved !", but in the end it all is "somebody should do something about it" - that is, in this specific area the interest of community tends to stop somewhere between jira and irc :/
