Can be useful to use

{host:key.func()}

on External Checks, to modify gathered items with external programs or scripts or get another type of information based on item results.

Somehow similar to ~~ZBXNEXT-1443~~ or even duplicates it.

Yes! Ultimately one can accomplish the same task with ~~ZBXNEXT-1443~~ and it seems a more robust approach, I don't have the knowledge on how macros become available on different locations, but this seems a simpler development for this particular case.
