 Description

I would like to be able to set host macros based on received values from a network discovery.

For instance, based on the snmp check I would know which SNMP communicy the discovered hosts accepts and I could set the community via a host macro.

Currently, I have to have a template per community string that has the macro set and link it to the proper template.

to clarify, instead of using the returned value from the discovery check as a macro/variable, you would set the macro/variable based on which discovery check actually worked

Ah, yes. That is what I meant. Although reusing the value would be a neat addition, I also see other uses for this functionality.
For instance, one could have multiple hosts in different clusters. Using a network discovery agent check to find out to which cluster a machine belongs, we could set user macros on the host to tune triggers etc. to certain clusters without the need for separate templates or manual tuning.

It would be handy to make a selectable setting to override an already set host level user macro as well.

ZBXNEXT-3704 is closely related. Like ZBXNEXT-3894 it mentions action operations as a possible implementation path.

This is something which I am also interested in - the ability to discover devices with a particular OID, and create a host macro for the resultant discovered hosts with the value.
