It seems that if you have been using Zabbix for a long time and just upgrading in place you never get any of the new templates or related configuration. This is a problem, all such things should be included in the upgrade in some way. The issue is that after several versions, it seems impossible to actually fix this. For example, in looking to get automatic inventory working, it seems I'm missing a template that would have items for windows that are set to put values into the inventory. I try to import the 3.2 Windows template and get this failure:
Cannot import template "Template OS Windows", linked template "Template App Zabbix Agent" does not exist.
So that's an issue, it shouldn't be linked to another template as that causes dependency issues. I try finding that template and find nothing unless I go all the way back to a 2.2 archive where I find it. Unsure if that's valid or if it should exist in a much newer version at this point, I try to import anyway, and that fails with this error:
Cannot find value map "Zabbix agent ping status" used for item "Agent ping" on "Template App Zabbix Agent".
So that's an even bigger issue because now there is a template that can't be used without a value mapping that we really have no idea where to find. It also points out that there is much more than default templates missing at this point, we're missing a LOT of default items in all areas of the software. Obviously we should not have to stand up a fresh server to try to find these defaults, export, and import to our production server. The software should be adding new defaults in the upgrade process (and of course checking for collisions if versioning is not used to avoid forced undesired alterations).
