I often use the zabbix[stats,{$ZABBIX.PROXY.ADDRESS},{$ZABBIX.PROXY.PORT}]] item on the template Remote proxy: https://git.zabbix.com/projects/ZBX/repos/zabbix/browse/templates/app/zabbix_proxy/template_app_zabbix_proxy.yaml#1440
If the proxy does not respond, the "internal poller" process takes 100% of his load and gives me "Zabbix server: Utilization of internal poller processes over 75%".

Moreover, the default (warning) level log does not show the error (but debug does), and there is no way from GUI (not found in the configuration file either, but perhaps it's a mistake and a failure on my part to read the documentation) to set a timeout.
