See drag-and-drop.png. It shows a drag action. If the icon is dropped where it is depicted, it returns back to where it were before the drag and drop.

It can be seen that the icon was moved more than 100 pixels to the right and the grid size is 50x50. Users probably expect that the minimum drag and drop distance is not that larger than the grid size.
