net.if.in and net.if.out items don't work on linux

      sles 10 sp1, trunk revision 5930

      on a fresh install of zabbix, items net.if.in and net.if.out (linked from the default linux template to default zabbix server) return no data.
      there are no errors logged with default loglevels.
