https://www.zabbix.com/documentation/2.2/manual/api/reference/screenitem/object#screen_item suggests that colspan & rowspan are mandatory, although screen.update does not treat them as such.

documentation (for all versions) should be reviewed; it is also suggested to check whether colspan/rowspan mandatory-ness is the same for all methods
(create, update etc)
