overall downstream linked item editing while preserving unmodified values works nicely, but there's one minor problem - while it is allowed to change application linkage for downstream items, it is still reset when editing an upstream item (and not changing application linkage).

either application linkage change should be disallowed downstream, or it should be preserved when modified.
