After creating a template with a dozen or so ODBC items, along with a couple calculated items and some triggers, I went to clone the template (as Zabbix 2.2 does not have ODBC LLC), and found to my dismay that the cloned template had nothing in it.

Without close examination, the exported version of the original template looks OK; it at least has SQL queries in it. So I should be able to work around by exporting the template, search-and-replace, then re-importing. But it does seem like cloning should work...
