Some devices or applications support notification of events by Email only.
How about having a new item e.g. smtp.trap[<regexp>,<from>,<subject>,<output>] supported by a separate process similar to SNMP trapper?

Beside enabling monitoring of mentioned devices and applications it may also provide another easy way of custom monitoring in the sense of Zabbix sender.
