When doing major upgrades I often load the latest Zabbix Server monitoring template.  When  I do, I'll typically edit the XML to change the template name to include the new version to avoid conflicts with what's already there.  Would it makes sense to just name them with the major version?  Then loading the new ones is simple, and unlinking the old ones is obvious since they'll have the old version numbers in the name.
