I want to collect process counts for a particular process. It could be in multiple states. I had to create 2 separate items plus a calculated item in order to allow the trigger logic that I wanted.

proc.num[] should allow you to specify multiple allowed states for any given process.
e.g.
proc.num[zabbix_agentd,zabbix,"run|sleep"]
