When creating a maintenence rule we would like to see the function, maybe a tickbox that would say "keep existing alerts" 

and this means when ticking this box, only alerts coming during the maintenence window will be hidden, but an alert coming lets say 5 minutes before will still be active untill resolved even during the maintenence window.
